5 Things to Consider Before Deciding to Start a Website Business
Saturday, December 29th, 2007Ok the first thing that draws most of us into the idea of making money online is it looks so simple right? You just throw up a webpage, add some clickable advertising like Adsense or YPN, submit to a handful of directories and wait for the cash to roll in, right? WRONG
Building a successful online business is no small endevour, there are literally millions of sites out there probably competing for the exact same keywords as you are, it’s a struggle make no mistake, but it can be quite rewarding if you know what you are doing.
In this article I am assuming that you are new to the idea of web promotion and are probably new to building sites as well. So I will go through the 5 most important things to consider when you are deciding to set up your first web business.
1. Do you know anything about your chosen content, or do you think it is just an easy topic to rant about?
With a web site you are offering web surfers information, having a good strong grasp on whatever topic you are choosing to base your site on is paramount. The people who will search for your keywords are doing so because they want to learn something, if they find your site and it is irrelevant or elementary they will probably never return. For my part I am very interested in Health fitness and weight loss, but lack a deep understanding of the technical sides to the topic, so I combined my desire to promote healthy living with my friends extensive knowledge and together we created INFORM 4 FREE
2. Do you have the technical skills to design a site that will stand out?
Currently the level of programming possible is mind blowing, there are people out there designing sites that are in my opinion works of art. Creating a basic website is super easy there are a ton of entry level programs available to help a complete novice produce a functional website in a matter of hours, but will that simple template design make your site stand out? Have a look around at other site that compete in your chosen field and have a think about what will make your site special, memorable. I recommend designing a basic site, submit it for review at any of the various forums available and continue to tweak the design, fellow web authors will be more than happy to share their knowledge with you, pay attention, practice and fine tune your design skills.
3. What do you know about SEO?
SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a major factor in the success of any site, if the search engines don’t like what they see, they will not list it in their search results, which will leave you at the bottom of the pile with no traffic in which to capitalize
4. How much time do you have to commit to publicizing your site?
Promoting your site requires time, a lot of time, an insane amount of time! Are you prepared to spend hours a day searching for links, writing articles, submitting to directories, posting on forums and the rest of the procedures necessary to promote your site to your viewers? If not, don’t bother.
5. Do you have enough information to continue to add quality content to your site at regular intervals?
So maybe you have done all the above, slaved away at promotions, tweaked your site to near perfection, but can you continue to build on the sites content? Or have you said all you have to say? It is very simple static sites that don’t update their content fade into obscurity rather quickly, if you are planning on making a site that will last and continue to provide you with income then you will need to keep adding to it.
I hope my little bit of insight helps with your decision to join the world of web design, another interesting and less time consuming way to get yourself out on the web is blogging, I have 2 blogs that I do just for the pure enjoyment of it all
YOUR LOCAL– this is my surf blog, I post anything that interests me in the world of surfing on here.
UNFOLDING PAGES– My first Novel, I am publishing it here a chapter at a time as I write it
Feel free to take a look at my site or blogs and get a better feel for the amount of work that is involved in maintaining a web presence, I am by no means a web expert, but I am getting there one day at a time.
